You will probably have heard of a small paradise called Bacalar, a town famous for its charming lagoon; if you still haven’t visited this destination, we will now give you some recommendations on activities that will be useful for your itinerary; join us!

Heaven on earth

Heaven on earth

The lagoon of seven colors is the main attraction here; you can see its different shades of blue, which range from a clear turquoise to dark blue, an effect that varies depending on the depth of the water and the intensity of the sun’s rays; this results in a truly beautiful sight.

This spectacular lagoon, with white sand and crystal clear water, is more than 40 kilometers in length and two kilometers wide, and on its banks you can find restaurants, palapas and piers from which you can admire its beauty.

If you want to discover as much of the lagoon as possible we recommend you purchase a boat tour downtown or in one of the restaurants, and during the tour you can admire the different colors, visit Pirates Channel and one of the sinkholes, and you can also swim in one of the beautiful locations.

You can also kayak, snorkel and scuba dive on the Bacalar lagoon.

Bacalar is a “Pueblo Mágico” you can easily discover on foot, especially the main square area downtown which is full of gardens, trees, benches, some children’s games, a bandstand and, of course, the town’s name.

Surrounding the square there are some shops and restaurants where you can find souvenirs and something to eat and drink.

The history of the San Felipe fort

The history of the San Felipe fort

If you want to learn about the pirates and history of Bacalar, the San Felipe Fort is the place to go; it is located only a few steps away from the downtown bandstand; it was built to stop pirate ships from other parts of the world coming to pillage the town.

Currently the building is a museum in which you can learn about its history, the ways the building has been used, as well as Mayan relics, colonial articles, maps and information on important events in the region.

The fort opens from Tuesday to Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

  • The Bacalar sign: this is the ideal place for taking a selfie and letting your friends know on the social networks that you are here; it’s just beside the bandstand.
